The Norwegian government has officially decided to abandon the controversial monument project titled “Memory Wound,” designed by Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg to commemorate the victims of the 2011 Utøya massacre. The original proposal called for a dramatic architectural intervention—a deep, sharp incision carved into the rocky shoreline at Sørbråten, with the names of the victims inscribed within the monument. However, the plan faced strong opposition from local residents who felt that the monument would serve as a constant, painful reminder of the tragedy and disrupt the natural landscape. Due to the intense backlash, authorities decided to halt the project and instead pursue a new memorial concept. This new design process will involve close consultation with survivors, families of the victims, and the local community to ensure the monument respects their wishes and feelings. The replacement memorial is planned to be located at Utøyakaia, on the opposite side of the island, creating a more sensitive and inclusive space for remembrance.
