The Monumental Challenges Toolkit is an educational resource created to help teachers explore contested histories through the study of monuments and public space. It shows why monuments become controversial, how historical narratives evolve, and how students can critically examine the heritage around them.
The toolkit includes:
• guidance for teaching sensitive or polarising topics in an inclusive and safe way
• ready-to-use lesson plans based on global case studies
• frameworks for understanding multiperspectivity, identity, privilege, and historical significance
• practical methods for place-based learning and for engaging students directly with public memory
Its purpose is to develop critical thinking, democratic competences, and constructive dialogue, helping young people understand how societies remember, reinterpret, and sometimes contest the past.
