In 2021, the statue of Samuel von Brukenthal in Sibiu’s main square was vandalized with paint — an act that quickly sparked public debate about memory, identity, and contested heritage in Romania. The perpetrator, a 37-year-old local resident, was later identified and fined by the police, according to Sibiu100.ro.

This event, while isolated, highlighted how public monuments can become focal points for social tension and reinterpretation. It also inspired the development of the Nordic Insights project, which explores how different societies — including those in the Nordic region — address controversial monuments, recontextualize heritage, and promote inclusive cultural dialogue.
