Held from August 31 to September 6, 2024, the How to Reframe Monuments workshop focused on five Soviet-era statues and memorials in northeastern Estonia—such as the removed Lenin statue in Narva, a WWII soldier in Sillamäe, and a Kreenholm strike monument. Organized by the Estonian Academy of Arts, the event brought together artists, researchers, and students to explore creative, non-destructive strategies for reinterpreting these controversial monuments. Through lectures, site visits, and experimental fieldwork, participants investigated how public art and design can reframe statues as tools for dialogue, not division, within contested memory landscapes.
